How to choose a budget hotel in Puri near the sea beach

Puri has hundreds of hotels, and many describe themselves as "near the sea beach and temple". Those words can mean very different distances, so a few checks before you book will save time and money.

1. Check the distance to the beach and the temple separately

Jagannath Temple and Puri Beach are not at the same spot. A hotel close to the temple can be a 13 to 17 minute walk from the sea, and a beachfront hotel can be a short ride from the temple. Decide which you will visit more, then choose the hotel that is closest to it. Our hotel is a 3-minute walk from Puri Beach and within 2 km of the temple.

2. Choose AC or fan to match the season

From November to February a ceiling fan is usually enough. From March to May, air conditioning makes a real difference. Look at our AC rooms in Puri and the fan-cooled Standard Room to compare.

3. Ask what is and is not included

Many budget hotels do not include breakfast, a pool or a spa. Ask before you pay. We do not offer breakfast, a pool, a spa or an airport shuttle, and we say so up front.

4. Look for parking and a 24-hour front desk

Trains and buses often arrive at night or very early. A staffed desk and free parking make arrivals easier.

5. Trust real photos

Look for recent photos of the actual rooms, corridors and bathrooms. You can see ours on the home page gallery and the rooms page.

Swargadwar, Puri: where to stay and what is nearby

Swargadwar is one of the best-known parts of Puri, and many visitors look for a hotel here because it puts them close to the sea.

What Swargadwar is known for

Swargadwar Sea Beach, whose name is often translated as the door to heaven, has deep spiritual meaning for Hindus. It is also known for sunrise and sunset views and a lively atmosphere, with Sea Beach Road offering shops and places to eat.

How it compares with Golden Beach

Swargadwar is busy and full of life. Golden Beach, a short distance along the coast, was certified Blue Flag in 2020 and is known for being cleaner and calmer. Many travellers see both during one stay.

Why stay here

  • The sea is a few minutes from your door.
  • Jagannath Temple is within 2 km.
  • Cabs and auto-rickshaws are easy to find for day trips to Konark, Raghurajpur and Chilika.

Hotel JM International stands on a quieter lane in Swargadwar, about a 3-minute walk from Puri Beach. See our rooms, or read the full guide to beaches in Puri.

Beaches in Puri: Puri Beach, Golden Beach, Swargadwar and beyond

Puri Beach stretches along the Bay of Bengal and is the city's most popular beach, easy to reach from the temple area.

Puri Beach and Swargadwar

The main beach is lively, with sunrise walks, seafood stalls and sand art. Swargadwar, part of the same coast, is known for sunsets. The annual Puri Beach Festival is held in November.

Golden Beach (Blue Flag)

Golden Beach was awarded the Blue Flag certification in October 2020, which recognises clean water, safety and environmental standards. It tends to be calmer than the main beach, so it is a good pick for a quiet evening.

Quieter beaches nearby

  • Balighai Beach, around 8 km from Puri, is known for being calm and uncrowded.
  • Baliharachandi Beach, about 27 km away on the road to Konark.
  • Chandrabhaga Beach, near Konark Sun Temple, with a long stretch of golden sand.

Staying safe

The sea can be rough, especially in the monsoon. Swim only where lifeguards are posted, and avoid going far out. The best months for beach days are October to February.

Booking a hotel in Puri for Ratha Yatra

Festival stay guide

Booking a hotel in Puri for Ratha Yatra

Ratha Yatra, usually held in June or July, is Puri's biggest festival. The deities of Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra travel by chariot along the Bada Danda to Gundicha Temple, where they stay for seven days.

Book early

Hotels fill quickly around the festival, and availability and rates change with the dates. Confirm the official dates, then enquire as early as you can.

Stay within reach of the Bada Danda

Crowds are heavy during the festival, so a hotel within about 2 km of Jagannath Temple makes the day easier. Hotel JM International is within that distance, and the front desk is open 24 hours for early starts.

Plan for the heat and rain

June and July can be hot, humid and wet. An air-conditioned room helps you rest. See our AC rooms, and read the best time to visit Puri.

Before you go

  • Carry water, a hat and a light rain cover.
  • Keep valuables in your room.
  • Agree taxi and guide prices in advance.

Two relaxed days in Puri: a simple plan

A guide for first-time visitors

Two relaxed days in Puri: a simple plan

Puri rewards a slow pace. This plan keeps the days light, with the temple and the sea at the centre and one day trip to round things out.

Day one: temple, then the sea

Go to Jagannath Temple early, when the lines are shorter and the air is cooler. After darshan, walk along the Bada Danda, the wide Grand Road that runs from the temple to Gundicha Temple. Have lunch, rest at the hotel through the hottest hours, and head to Puri Beach in the late afternoon. It is about a three-minute walk from our door.

Day two: crafts and Konark

Take a taxi to Raghurajpur, a heritage crafts village about 12 km from Puri, to see Pattachitra paintings and palm-leaf art being made. If you still have energy, Konark Sun Temple is about 35 km away. It is a 13th-century UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a half-day is enough to see it properly.

Tips

  • Carry water, a hat and sunscreen for the beach and Konark.
  • Agree the taxi fare before you set off.
  • If you have a third day, Chilika Lake is a full-day outing.
The best time to visit Puri

Weather, sea and festival crowds

The best time to visit Puri

Puri can be visited all year, but the experience changes a lot with the seasons.

November to February: the best weather

These are the most comfortable months for sightseeing, beach walks and day trips. Days are mild, which makes the temple, Konark and Raghurajpur much easier. This is also when Chilika Lake is at its most pleasant.

March to May: hot and humid

Plan your outings for early morning and evening, and rest indoors in the afternoon. An air-conditioned room helps a great deal in these months.

June to September: monsoon and Ratha Yatra

The sea can be rough, so swim only where lifeguards are posted, or simply enjoy the waves from the shore. The big draw is the Ratha Yatra chariot festival, usually in June or July, when Puri fills with devotees. If you plan to come then, book your room well in advance.

October

The weather begins to ease as the monsoon retreats, and crowds are lighter than in peak winter.

Day trips from Puri: Raghurajpur, Konark and Chilika

Three easy excursions by taxi

Day trips from Puri: Raghurajpur, Konark and Chilika

Puri sits on Odisha's Golden Triangle with Bhubaneswar and Konark, and several rewarding trips are within a day's reach.

Raghurajpur artists' village, about 12 km

Raghurajpur is a long-established crafts village. Families here paint Pattachitra scrolls and carve and decorate palm-leaf manuscripts, often working in front of their homes. Visit in daylight to watch the artists at work.

Konark Sun Temple, about 35 km

Built in the 13th century and designed as a giant chariot, Konark is known for its carved stone wheels and Kalinga architecture. A local guide helps you understand the carvings.

Chilika Lake, about 50 km

Chilika is Asia's largest brackish water lagoon. From Satapada, boat rides take you to see Irrawaddy dolphins. Winter is a good time to go.

How to go

Hire a taxi for the day and start early. Ask our front desk if you would like help finding a reliable driver.

Visiting Jagannath Temple: what first-timers should know

Before you go

Visiting Jagannath Temple: what first-timers should know

Shri Jagannath Temple stands at one end of the Bada Danda, and its tall spire can be seen from far across the town.

Who can enter

The temple is open to Hindus only. If you are not able to go in, the Bada Danda and the lanes around the temple are still worth a walk, especially in the evening.

When to go

Early morning is usually the calmest time. Expect queues on weekends, holidays and festival days.

Before you leave the hotel

  • Check the temple's current rules on phones, cameras, bags and footwear. They are strict, so leave valuables in your room.
  • Dress modestly.
  • Priests and attendants can be insistent with first-time visitors. Agree any offering or guide fee in advance, and politely decline if you prefer.

Mahaprasad and Gundicha

The temple is famous for its Mahaprasad, the food offered to the deities, including the traditional 56 bhogas. At the far end of the Bada Danda, Gundicha Temple is where the deities rest during Ratha Yatra, and it is usually quieter than the main temple.

The hotel is within two kilometres of the temple, so you can easily go in the early hours and be back for a rest.

Stay close to it all

Book a room a few minutes from the beach and the temple.
